Born in 1985 in the countryside of South Korea, Juyoung Ku inherited his passion for art and learned art fundamentals from his father, a traditional realist painter. Ku grew up surrounded by the pop culture of the late 80s and 90s, including manga, anime, toys and arcade games-visual language that would later merge naturally with his fine art training.

Ku moved to the United States in the late 1990s, settling in the San Francisco Bay Area. The transition introduced a new visual world along with cultural, linguistic, social and economic challenges, including the experience of watching his mother navigate single parenthood. The ongoing process of assimilating and integrating across cultures and identities has become part of his daily life and laid the conceptual foundation for his art.

Ku earned an associate’s degree in Art from Skyline College in 2018 and a bachelor of Arts in Spatial Art from San Jose State University in 2020. During his education, he was particularly drawn to artists such as Takashi Murakami, Basquiat, Jeff Koons, and Keith Harving, whose work left a lasting influence and expanded his visual library. These experiences, combined with his upbringing and cross-cultural transitions, guided the development of a hybrid visual language that defines his work today.

Navigating the tension between Korean traditional values and American social rhythms became a familiar part of his experience. Caught between preserving his heritage and seeking belonging, Ku developed a hybrid visual language that embraces duality rather than choosing between identities. His work blends Korean ink painting with Asian and American pop culture, street art, and contemporary art aesthetics, creating a space where different sub-identities can meet, reconcile, and coexist.

This exploration of hybridity naturally extends into Ku’s teaching and community projects. He has worked with students of all ages, creating accessible, inclusive learning spaces that encourage self-expression. In public art projects, he often leads community-participatory murals, designing imagery approachable for beginners while maintaining his artistic vision. Working with diverse groups has strengthened his ability to break down complex processes, build confidence, and foster shared ownership in collaborative creative spaces.

Ku has exhibited in solo and group shows, created public murals, and continues to develop a practice rooted in cultural hybridity and the belief that multiple identities can coexist and enrich one another.

작가노트 ARTIST STATEMENT

My work explores the coexistence of conflicting identities. I paint to understand how cultural, personal, and social forces that pull in different directions can come together. Growing up between diverse ethnic, religious, and social environments, I often felt divided, and my work allows me to confront these tensions and imagine a space where they coexist.

I create hybrid characters that blend my own designs with elements from vintage toys, cartoons, and video games such as Astroboy, Ultraman, Power Rangers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Betty Boop. These figures balance originality and familiarity while reflecting the many layers of my identity. I often depict them from multiple viewpoints, including dissected forms, organ close-ups, and microscopic perspectives, showing how disparate sources integrate deeply.

Around these figures, I develop hybrid written characters combining traditional Korean hanja, modern Korean script, and English letters. Some incorporate comic book inspired ideophones translated into hanja and painted as inflated bubble letters referencing Jeff Koons’ balloon-animal aesthetic. These writings become hybrid organisms themselves, connecting old and new Korean, English, pop culture, and contemporary art.

I also paint smaller paired characters inspired by Korean traditional festivals such as wrestling and dancing. One pair is rendered in traditional black-and-white ink, while the other is expressed in a doodle style. Their interactions remain ambiguous, suggesting both resistance and embrace. The characters inhabit natural landscapes in Korean ink painting. Mountains, trees, skies, and waves symbolize obstacles and forces that challenge movement.

My aesthetic reflects a collage of influences from rural landscapes of Korea to anime, comic, and arcades games, alongside traditional art training I received from my father. After moving to San Francisco in the late 1990s, my visual vocabulary expanded to include street art, American pop culture, and academic art education, all of which continue to shape my art. I bring these influences together to show that art from different sources can share the same space.

Ultimately, my art examines the intersections where conflicting forces meet, seeking to understand how the multiple, sometimes contradictory parts of the self can coexist in harmony.

저는 자신만의 디자인과 빈티지 장난감, 만화, 비디오 게임 요소를 결합한 하이브리드 캐릭터를 만듭니다. 예를 들어 아스트로보이, 울트라맨, 파워레인저, 닌자 거북이, 베티 붑 등이 있습니다. 시각적으로 저는 독창성과 친숙함 사이의 균형을 찾고자 합니다. 개념적으로, 이러한 하이브리드는 제 정체성의 여러 층을 반영합니다. 저는 종종 해부된 형태, 장기 클로즈업, 심지어 미시적 관점 등 여러 시점에서 이들을 묘사합니다. 이러한 접근은 다양한 요소들이 어떻게 완전히 고정되고 깊게 통합되는지를 보여줍니다.

하이브리드 장난감 주변에는 전통 한자, 현대 한국어, 영어 글자를 결합한 하이브리드 문자도 제작합니다. 이 기호들은 제 캐릭터가 서로 다른 문화적 언어를 하나의 시각적 형태로 결합하는 것과 동일한 방식으로 기능합니다. 일부 글자는 만화에서 영감을 받은 의성어·의태어를 한자로 번역한 것이며, 이를 Jeff Koons의 풍선 동물 조각에서 영감을 받은 부풀린 풍선 글자 형태로 그립니다. 이 과정을 통해 문자 역시 또 다른 하이브리드 생명체가 되어 옛 한국어와 현대 한국어, 영어, 대중문화, 현대미술적 영향을 연결합니다.

또한 저는 한국 전통 축제에서 영감을 받은 장면을 연출하는 작은 캐릭터들을 자주 쌍으로 그립니다. 한 쌍은 전통 흑백 수묵화 스타일로, 다른 한 쌍은 표현적인 낙서 스타일로 그립니다. 이들은 함께 움직이지만 서로 저항하는지, 아니면 포옹을 향해 움직이는지는 불분명하게 표현됩니다.

캐릭터들은 한국 전통 수묵화로 그려진 자연 풍경 속에 서 있습니다. 산, 나무, 밤하늘은 길을 가로막는 장애물의 상징으로 작용하며, 넓고 불확실한 광야 속에서 길을 잃은 느낌을 줍니다. 물결은 움직임을 방해하고 우리가 길을 향해 나아갈 때 통제감을 상실하게 하는 힘을 나타냅니다. 다채로운 풍선 글자 한자는 어린 시절의 풍경과 이후 샌프란시스코 스트리트 아트 문화를 연결합니다.

제 작업의 전반적 미학은 다양한 영향의 콜라주를 반영합니다. 저는 한국 시골에서 성장하며 어린 시절 대부분을 만화책을 읽고, 만화를 보고, 오락실에서 시간을 보내며 보냈습니다. 이러한 초기 경험은 여전히 제 회화의 시각적 언어를 안내합니다. 사실주의 화가였던 아버지는 저에게 미술의 기초를 가르쳐주었고, 예술에 대한 초기 이해를 형성하는 데 큰 영향을 주었습니다. 1990년대 후반 샌프란시스코로 이주한 이후, 저는 스트리트 아트와 미국 대중문화와 접촉했습니다. 이러한 경험과 학문적 미술 교육은 지금도 제 작업에 영향을 미칩니다. 저는 이러한 요소들을 결합하여 서로 다른 출처의 예술이 하나의 공간에서 공존할 수 있음을 보여주고자 합니다.
