Juyoung Ku is a Korean American contemporary artist whose work merges Eastern and Western techniques and pop culture imagery. Growing up in rural South Korea, he was influenced by manga and arcade culture. After immigrating to the United States in the late 1990s, he encountered street art and American pop culture. Ku earned his BFA from SJSU and is currently pursuing an MFA at UC Davis. Integrating these cultural, artistic, and academic experiences has become the foundation for his hybrid visual language, which explores the pursuit of harmony through the integration of diverse identities within the self, enabling coexistence with others and the natural world as part of an interconnected whole.

구주영은 동양과 서양의 기법과 대중문화의 이미지를 융합하는 한국계 미국인 현대미술 작가이다. 그는 한국의 시골에서 성장하며 만화와 오락실 문화의 영향을 받았다. 1990년대 후반 미국으로 이주한 후에는 스트리트 아트와 미국 대중문화를 접하며 자신의 시각적 영향의 범위를 확장했다. 구는 산호세 주립대학교에서 미술학사(BFA)를 취득했으며, 현재 캘리포니아 대학교 데이비스에서 미술학 석사(MFA) 과정을 밟고 있다. 이러한 다양한 문화적·예술적 경험과 학문적 교육을 통합하는 과정은 그의 하이브리드 시각 언어의 기반이 되었으며, 이는 개인 내면에 존재하는 다양한 정체성들의 통해 조화를 추구하며, 서로 연결된 존재로서 타인 및 자연 세계와의 공존을 탐구한다.

작가노트 ARTIST STATEMENT

My work explores the pursuit of harmony through the integration of diverse identities within the self. I see wholeness not as uniformity but as balance among the many identities that exist within an individual. This idea extends beyond the self, suggesting that inner harmony provides the foundation for harmonious relationships between others and the natural world as part of an interconnected whole. Through a hybrid visual language that brings together Eastern and Western imagery, I explore how contrasting elements can coexist in balance without losing their individuality.

저의 작업은 개인 내면에 존재하는 다양한 정체성들의 통합을 통해 조화를 추구하는 과정을 탐구합니다. 저는 온전함이 하나의 모습으로 통일되는 것이 아니라, 한 개인 안에 존재하는 다양한 전체성들이 균형을 이루는 상태라고 생각합니다. 이러한 생각은 개인을 넘어 확장되며, 내면의 조화가 서로 연결된 전체의 일부로서 타인과 자연 세계와 조화롭게 관계를 맺는 기반이 된다고 봅니다. 저는 동양과 서양의 이미지가 결합된 하이브리드 시각 언어를 통해, 서로 다른 요서들이 각자의 개성을 잃지 않으면서도 균형 속에서 공존할 수 있는 가능성을 탐구합니다.
